Monthly Wrap Up: May 2013

I didn't get as much reading done this month as I did last month because I went to visit a friend for a week and have otherwise been slogging through books that were a) long and b) not very absorbing. But it's okay because PERSEVERANCE.

Books read in May
  1. Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne
  2. Bitten by Kelley Armstrong
  3. Jamrach's Menagerie by Carol Birch
  4. Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie
  5. Inferno by Dan Brown
  6. White Crow by Marcus Sedgwick
  7. Witch Light by Susan Fletcher
  8. The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong
  9. Wool by Hugh Howey
Book of the Month
This was actually pretty tough to choose because I really loved Witch Light, Wool and The Summoning but ultimately I picked Bitten because I just couldn't put it down. Kelley Armstrong has ruined my life, man.

Reviews

I didn't quite reach my goal of ten books this month, but I did reach my goal of getting a full time job, so I think I can be forgiven, y/y? I start as a Word Processor/Editor on Monday! I'm very excited, because this means that I can do something I love while getting paid for it. *sobs* I'm not sure how this is going to affect my reading yet. It might actually help, because I'll have less time for procrastination, and more money to buy ALL THE BOOKS.

Books read in May

  1. Where I Belong by Gwendolyn Heasley
  2. The Rules for Disappearing by Ashley Elston
  3. Parallel by Lauren Miller
  4. Boy Nobody by Allen Zadoff
  5. The Summer I Became a Nerd by Leah Rae Miller
  6. Erased by Jennifer Rush
  7. Frostbite: The Graphic Novel by Richelle Mead and Emma Vieceli

Book of the Month
This book has ruined my life. Elizabeth Norris is so evil and talented, it makes me want to cry. Anyone who saw my breakdown on Twitter knows what Unbreakable did to me.

Then it Grayson makes it clear that he wants her to stay working for him, and Leah doesn't understand why. She's crushed on him for years, but always known he's out of her league… isn't he? As the summer rolls on and they spend more time together the spark between them grows, but with Alec's feelings starting to change too, suddenly things become a whole lot more complicated. Now Leah finds herself drawn into a battle between brothers - and the consequences could be deadly… - Goodreads

Can you believe I have never read anything by Jennifer Echols before? You probably can believe it, because I'm always way, way behind everyone else. I haven't even read any Sarah Dessen yet! Anyway, this one is a great choice if you haven't read any Echols before. At least, I think so, but since I haven't read any of her other books yet I cannot compare them. There's a lot of drama, an awesome main character, and some steamy scenes. Oh, and it's got some scary stuff in there too. If you're scared of heights like I am.

And when Janelle learns that someone she cares about—someone from her own world—has become one of the missing, she knows that she has to help Barclay, regardless of the danger. Now Janelle has five days to track down the real culprit. Five days to locate the missing people before they’re lost forever. Five days to reunite with the boy who stole her heart. But as the clues begin to add up, Janelle realizes that she’s in way over her head—and that she may not have known Ben as well as she thought. Can she uncover the truth before everyone she cares about is killed? - Goodreads

I'm going to give you a fair warning, this review is likely going to be a sobfest. It may even sound like I'm ranting towards the end, and if that happens then I promise it's a good type of rant. Unbreakable broke my heart, you see, and then tore it out and stomped on it for good measure. It's been a while since a book made me feel this way, and I hope it never happens again. (That was a lie, I love it when books hurt me like this.)

Rosie’s always been impulsive. She didn’t intend to set her cheating ex-boyfriend’s car on fire. And she never thought her attempts to make amends could be considered stalking. So when she’s served with a temporary restraining order on the first day of summer vacation, she’s heartbroken—and furious.

To put distance between Rosie and her ex, Rosie’s parents send her on a cross-country road trip with responsible, reliable neighbor Matty and his two friends. Forget freedom of the road, Rosie wants to hitchhike home and win back her ex. But her determination starts to dwindle with each passing mile. Because Rosie’s spark of anger? It may have just ignited a romance with someone new… - Goodreads

In the past, I never used to post reviews of books that I didn't finish. I didn't feel like I could write enough about them for the post to be considered a review. But I have changed my mind, and decided to give this a try. Please don't class this as an "official" review, more of my jumbled thoughts on the book and why I wasn't able to finish it.

My issue with How My Summer Went Up in Flames is the main character, Rosie. I'm pretty sure most of you readers out there wouldn't be able to get into a book with a horrible main character. If I can't connect with the protagonist, there is little hope for me. Which is why I couldn't finish this one.

Debut-a-Thon Sign Ups

I've been spending a lot of my online life this year promoting and talking about 2013 YA debuts. I have a monthly showcase feature, and two of my favourite books of the year thus far have been from debut authors.  The Debut Showcase feature is a lot of fun to write, but it's not really something that other people can partake in. So, naturally, my silly little brain went to work and came up with THIS.

I want to say a HUGE thanks to Judith from Paper Riot for putting up with my silliness and making the two buttons/images for me. Without her you would have been stuck with something that came from MS Paint. And thanks again for helping brainstorm!

I have put off buying this graphic novel for the longest time because when I read the first one I had to wait a year to get my hands on this. So of course it was only natural to wait an extra year in the hopes that the wait for Shadow Kiss wouldn't be too painful. I don't even know when the Shadow Kiss graphic novel is coming out, but I got this while Bout of Books was on and just thought I could do with a quick, fun read.

On the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader—perky, popular, and dating the star quarterback. But inside, Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That she’s a nerd hiding in a popular girl's body isn’t just unknown, it's anti-known. And she needs to keep it that way.

Summer is the only time Maddie lets her real self out to play, but when she slips up and the adorkable guy behind the local comic shop’s counter uncovers her secret, she’s busted. Before she can shake a pom-pom, Maddie’s whisked into Logan’s world of comic conventions, live-action role-playing, and first-person-shooter video games. And she loves it. But the more she denies who she really is, the deeper her lies become…and the more she risks losing Logan forever. - Goodreads

Summer's here, which means I am experiencing my annual craving for summer contemporaries. I think the main reason for this is the English weather.

The Summer I Became a Nerd promised to be a light read with a cute romance and a main character who discovers herself and comes to accept it. And that is exactly what this book is. It's nothing amazing, but I think it would do for a quick read if you need a break between bigger stuff.

Goodreads Stars: 2
Rating: Bland

Boy Nobody is the perennial new kid in school, the one few notice and nobody thinks much about. He shows up in a new high school in a new town under a new name, makes a few friends, and doesn't stay long. Just long enough for someone in his new friend's family to die-of "natural causes." Mission accomplished, Boy Nobody disappears, moving on to the next target.

But when he's assigned to the mayor of New York City, things change. The daughter is unlike anyone he has encountered before; the mayor reminds him of his father. And when memories and questions surface, his handlers at The Program are watching. Because somewhere deep inside, Boy Nobody is somebody: the kid he once was; the teen who wants normal things, like a real home and parents; a young man who wants out. And who just might want those things badly enough to sabotage The Program's mission.

In this action-packed series debut, author Allen Zadoff pens a page-turning thriller that is as thought-provoking as it is gripping, introducing an utterly original and unforgettable antihero. - Goodreads

Boy Nobody started off really well. The book opens with the main character, who I shall call Benjamin because that's one of his undercover names, killing an important Chinese business man after gaining entry to his house through the guy's son. It was all very interesting because Benjamin was cold, calculating, and he got the job done. Later on he took out four Chinese guys by himself. Did I mention that he's sixteen?

Weekly Wrap Up (01.05.13 - 12.05.13)

This week has been one of the most hectic weeks of my life. Lawd, it was awful. And also great. I went to a job interview, which I wasn't expecting at all, and I'm waiting to hear back from them to see if I can have a second interview. Wish me luck!

I didn't get much reading done, and I barely commented on any blogs, so I'm sorry about that! I'm desperately trying to catch up with my reading because I have a couple of reviews due next week, and then there's also the Bout of Books read-a-thon starting tomorrow. Is anyone else taking part in that? I am very excited for it!

Anyway, on with the reviews and things from the start of May up until now. Because if I just post the stuff from this past week then it'll be embarrassing.

Abby Barnes had a plan. The Plan. She'd go to Northwestern, major in journalism, and land a job at a national newspaper, all before she turned twenty-two. But one tiny choice—taking a drama class her senior year of high school—changed all that. Now, on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, Abby is stuck on a Hollywood movie set, miles from where she wants to be, wishing she could rewind her life. The next morning, she's in a dorm room at Yale, with no memory of how she got there. Overnight, it's as if her past has been rewritten.

With the help of Caitlin, her science-savvy BFF, Abby discovers that this new reality is the result of a cosmic collision of parallel universes that has Abby living an alternate version of her life. And not only that: Abby's life changes every time her parallel self makes a new choice. Meanwhile, her parallel is living out Abby's senior year of high school and falling for someone Abby's never even met.

As she struggles to navigate her ever-shifting existence, forced to live out the consequences of a path she didn't choose, Abby must let go of the Plan and learn to focus on the present, without losing sight of who she is, the boy who might just be her soul mate, and the destiny that's finally within reach. - Goodreads

This book distressed me greatly *sobs* Especially the ending

I'm not sure if you know this, but I'm telling you now anyway: I adore parallel universe/multi-verse/time travel stuff. Much like Christina from A Reader of Fictions. It all really intrigues me, and I love thinking that it's a possibility with our own universe and not just in fiction. How cool would it be to discover a parallel universe? Of course, it wouldn't be cool if that universe declared war on us, or if it collides with ours and changes our lives like the parallel universe did in Parallel.

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly
Release Date: November 7, 2006
Publisher: Atria
Source: Bought
Rating: 4 out of 5

High in his attic bedroom, twelve-year-old David mourns the death of his mother, with only the books on his shelf for company. But those books have begun to whisper to him in the darkness. Angry and alone, he takes refuge in his imagination and soon finds that reality and fantasy have begun to meld. While his family falls apart around him, David is violently propelled into a world that is a strange reflection of his own -- populated by heroes and monsters and ruled by a faded king who keeps his secrets in a mysterious book, The Book of Lost Things.

Taking readers on a vivid journey through the loss of innocence into adulthood and beyond, New York Times bestselling author John Connolly tells a dark and compelling tale that reminds us of the enduring power of stories in our lives.

The Book of Lost Things encompasses some of my favourite things - fairytales nightmare inducing villains. It is also, like Inkheart, a love letter to books and their readers.

“Once upon a time – for that is how all stories should begin – there was a boy who lost his mother.”

The story follows our protagonist, a young boy named David. At the beginning, we are introduced to him at a very traumatic time in his life - he is about to lose his mother. We learn that David has OCD, doesn't have many friends and finally, that he loves to read. Above all, David loves fairytales. David is forced to accept the changes in his life, including his new stepmother and a baby brother, all while still grieving the mother he lost. After an accident one day, David crosses over into a different land; a place where werewolves exist, where trolls lurk under bridges and far away a King keeps a magical tome known as 'The Book of Lost Things'.

The Book of Lost Things takes many famous fairytales, such as Snow White, Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel and subverts the original tales into dark, new stories. David encounters many fairytale characters on his journey, each of them different from the tales he knows. From communist dwarves to a huntress whose favourite game is children, it is a place where a young boy like David finds himself in constant danger.

“You had evil inside you, and you indulged it. Men will always indulge it.”

This is very much a book about childhood from an adult's perspective. It is a story about grief, courage and in many ways, is a study of the temptation found in every human to do terrible things to each other, especially children, who have no real idea of the consequences of their actions. David may only be a child but he is touched by traditionally adult emotions - grief, jealousy and self-awareness. He is an inherently flawed character, not the kind of child that is easily likeable or sympathetic but I think that's what him such a great character. He develops with every experience and realises his own flaws, enough so to understand right from wrong in a particularly adult way.

Minor thoughts:
  • The Crooked Man is legit terrifying, actual nightmare fodder. GOOD LUCK SLEEPING AFTER READING ABOUT HIM T B H.
  • The books have actual personalities and it made me cry. Boring books which snore loudly, fairytales which whisper about magical things, just the image that each book is alive in its own way was beautiful to me.
  • The flowers in the forest made me cry.
  • Children can be the worst.
  • The female characters are by and large unimpressive. I get why they're written in a certain way but dude, fairytales are full of negative female stereotypes. The book's one, quite significant weakness is in its portrayal of women and is one of the main reasons I find David to be vastly unsympathetic as a protagonist.

Witness Protection has taken nearly everything from her. But for now, they’ve given her a new name, Megan Rose Jones, and a horrible hair color. Meg has just about had it with all the Suits’ rules — and her dad’s silence. If he won’t help, it’s time she got some answers for herself.

But Meg isn’t counting on Ethan Landry, an adorable Louisiana farm boy who’s too smart for his own good. He knows Meg is hiding something big. And it just might get both of them killed. As they embark on a perilous journey to free her family once and for all, Meg discovers that there’s only one rule that really matters — survival. - Goodreads

The Rules for Disappearing definitely wasn't one of my most anticipated reads of the year, but I had been looking forward to reading it for a while - ever since I received a copy for review. I am so pleased with this story, much more so than I thought I would be. The mystery is great, the pacing is quick, and I loved the main character and her relationships with Ethan and Teeny. Adorable.

Meet Corrinne. She's living every girl's dream in New York City--shopping sprees at Barneys, open access to the best clubs and parties, and her own horse at the country club. Her perfect life is perfectly on track. At least it was. . . .

When Corrinne's father is laid off, her world suddenly falls apart. Instead of heading to boarding school, she's stripped of her credit cards and shipped off to the boonies of Texas to live with her grandparents. On her own in a big public school and forced to take a job shoveling manure, Corrinne is determined to get back to the life she's supposed to be living. She doesn't care who she stomps on in the process. But when Corrinne makes an unlikely friend and discovers a total hottie at work, she begins to wonder if her life B.R.--before the recession--was as perfect as it seemed.

I have had Where I Belong on my Kindle for the longest time, and I am so glad to have finally been able to get to it. I'm pretty sure I bought it at the end of 2011, so that means it's been sitting unread for a year and a half. I have a book buying problem, I know.

I was in the mood for a light contemporary to read after I had finished two books in twenty four hours for Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-Thon, and while Where I Belong wasn't as light and fluffy as I was expecting, it was great to take a break and dive into this.

Embrace the Forbidden

What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences?
This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.

Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She's aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but it isn't until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put to the test. He's the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

If I was to describe this book in one word it would be shit. Complete shit. I was really looking forward to Sweet Evil because everyone seemed to love it. It's always being talked about on my Twitter timeline, and everyone is excited for the release of the second book. Sweet Evil just missed the mark in every single way. This book caused me so much distress. I read it for the 24 Hour Read-a-Thon, and so I was basically reading non-stop until I finished. That meant that I powered through all of the drama, relationship stuff, and sad bits in just a few hours, and it left me mentally exhausted. There was so much going on in this book!
